Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) refers to inhalation of pure oxygen in a chamber with more than twice the normal atmospheric pressure. It helps treat various diseases by improving oxygen deficiency in tissues by allowing oxygen to be dissolved in increased concentration in red blood cell-poor plasma or crystalloid/ colloid-diluted intravascular fluids.

How to relieve Ear Barotrauma (Airplane Ear)

When treatment begins, the air pressure within the chamber rises. In this case ear cavity pressure is often decreased complemented by an increase in the chamber compared to the outside air pressure. In such a scenario, the unusual stretching of the eardrum or tympanic membrane may precipitate pain in the ear. How to prevent ear popping and pressure :

  • ① Swallow   ② Yawn   ③ Valsalva maneuver

Valsalva maneuver : Inhale deeply and then hold your breath. Imagine that the chest and stomach muscles are very tight and bear down as though straining to initiate a bowel movement. Hold this position for a short time, then breathe out forcibly to release the breath rapidly.

Treatment
When set pressure is reached, the pressurization will be stoped.

When the set pressure is reached, the pressurization stops. The pressure in the chamber will be maintained for a certain period of time. During the treatment, while you inhaling high concentrated oxygen you can take a nap or just relax in the chamber.
